Mapping a drive letter to a network share means assigning an used drive letter (e.g. Z:) to another computer’s folder. This allows for easy interaction to the shared folder. The drive mapping will act just like a flash drive – you will be able to drag and drop files to it as well opening and saving documents directly from the remote shared folder.
These instructions are for computers that are NOT connected to the AG Domain. This may be your home computer or a laptop that is taken out of the office.
Note: If you are trying to connect from off campus or from a wireless connection on campus, you must establish a VPN connection before connecting to the server.
You will need to know the server name. This will usually be in the form of a hostname. The two most common servers are:
storage.vt.edu
fodder.ag.vt.edu
You will also need to know the shared folder name, for example: mystore\<your_PID>
1. Double click on My Computer
2. From the menu, Go to Tools -> Map Network Drive
3. Choose an available drive letter (Z: is fine)
4. In the Folder dialog box, enter your server name and share name in the form of \\server_name\share_name
a. Example of departmental storage: \\storage.vt.edu\aee
b. Example of personal storage: \\storage.vt.edu\mystore\<your_PID>
Note: When connecting to fodder.ag.vt.edu or the "t:", then put this in the folder dialog box: \\fodder.ag.vt.edu\pub
5. Then click on the link: Connect using a different user name.
6. You will need to supply your username and password
a. User name: hokies\<your_pid>
b. Password: <your hokies password>
7. Click Ok
8. Click Finish
You will need to reconnect in this way every time you reboot the computer.
