How to Connect to a File Server (Mac OSX)

Note:  If you are trying to connect from off campus or from a wireless connection on campus, you must establish a VPN connection before connecting to the server.

You will need to know the server name.  This will usually be in the form of a hostname.  The two most common servers are:
storage.vt.edu
fodder.ag.vt.edu

You will also need to know the shared folder name, for example: mystore\<your_PID>

  1. Finder → Go → Connect to Server
  2. Enter smb://server_name/share_folder_name
    1. Ex. smb://fodder.ag.vt.edu/workgroups$
    2. Ex. smb://storage.vt.edu/mystore/scott

For OSX 10.2/10.3/10.4, you will prompted for a Workgroup/Domain, username, and password.  Enter the following information:

    1. Workgroup/Domain: hokies
    2. username: your_PID
    3. password: your_hokies_password

A new volume will appear on your desktop with the same name as the share_folder_name.

 

For OSX 10.5/10.6, you will prompted for a username and password.  Enter the following information:

    1. username: hokies\your_PID
    2. password: your_hokies_password

By default the volume will not appear on your desktop, instead it will appear in the Finder window under Shared on the left bar.  If you would like to add an icon to your desktop:

Go to Finder, click on the Finder Menu → Preferences.  
Under the General section, under Show these items on the Desktop:, check the box: Connected servers

 

Note: You will need to reconnect to the server after each reboot.
