Wireless Network Access Policy and Procedures for VCE Unit Offices and AREC's

Issue: AHNR-IT is being asked by VCE office and AREC's for help installing wireless access capabilities.

Wireless Network Policy

  1. Wireless Security - State of Virginia and University IT security policies must be followed.  University Policy No. 7010 states: 2. Policy Information technology resources and services must be securely maintained, and must be associated with an individual who is responsible for ensuring their continued security.  Any wireless network attached to a VCE or AREC network maintained by AHNR-IT must be approved in writing prior to installation. Further, all end-to-end wireless network traffic, including the negotiation, authentication and association of clients to the wireless access point shall be encrypted with a minimum of a 128-bit rotating encryption key using a non-WEP cipher method. Wireless access points must be capable of storing or forwarding access accounting records as well as remote authentication of wireless clients. Access accounting records must be collected and archived on a regular schedule. To maintain security integrity, discovery of rogue wireless access points not adhering to this wireless security policy are subject to termination of wireless service without prior notice.
  2. Procurement - All wireless equipment must be specified by AHNR-IT and purchased on contracts specified by VITA (Virginia Information Technology Agency). All purchases must be approved by Communications Network Services (CNS) prior to being submitted for purchase.
  3. Support - Tier I (first line) technical support for wireless network equipment will be provided by the local Area Information Technologist (AIT) with Tier II support provided by AHNR-IT. The local Area Information Technologist provides technical support to their district.

Wireless Network Request Procedure

  1. Contact Mark Crawford (markc@vt.edu, (540) 231-5294) or Stephanie Collins (collinss@vt.edu, (540) 231-1794) to schedule a wireless site survey for your unit office or AREC. AHNR-IT and the local Area Information Technologist will perform the wireless site survey to determine the location of wireless equipment to provide optimal coverage. After completion of the site survey, AHNR-IT will specify the wireless equipment to be purchased and provide a quote to the requestor. Any changes or additions to electrical service will also be specified and submitted to the requestor for action.
  2. The unit office or AREC will provide funds for the purchase of the specified equipment, equipment maintenance contracts and travel costs incurred by AHNR-IT. Modifications or additions to electrical service will also be funded and ordered by the requestor.
  3. AHNR-IT will configure the wireless equipment upon arrival and schedule a time for installation.  The local Area Information Technologist and/or AHNR-IT will install the equipment and bring the wireless network online.
