Master Computer (pt 1)

Configure Sharing

  1. Ensure Simple File Sharing is off
    1. Right-click on the [Start] button and choose Explore.
    2. Select Tools from the menu bar and choose Folder Options.
    3. Select the [View] tab.
    4. At the bottom of the Advanced Settings section, uncheck Use simple file sharing.
    5. Click the [OK] button.
  2. In the Folders list, right-click on the C: drive and select Sharing and Security...
  3. Click the [New Share] button.
  4. Fill in the Share Name: field with 4HShare and then press the [OK] button.
  5. Click the [Permissions] button.
  6. Set the permissions for the users:
    1. Highlight Everyone and press the [Remove] button.
    2. Press the [Add] button.
    3. For each user that needs access, type in HOKIES\username.  If you have multiple names, separate them with semi-colons.  Click the [Check Names] button.
    4. Click [OK].
    5. Click each name and ensure that the Change box is checked in the Allow column.  Then press the [OK] button.
  7. Right-click on the My Computer icon on either the Desktop or the Start Menu and select Properties. 
  8. Select the [Computer Name] tab.
  9. Note the full Computer Name: for a further step. (including the ag.w2k.vt.edu portion)

Configure 4HPlus!

  1. In the Main window, select Set Up Networking.
  2. Type minicooper and press [Enter].
  3. Ensure the Set 'Multiple Installations on Network'... box is checked.
  4. Ensure the Read and Write option is selected.
  5. In the Select Share Drive Letter box, choose C:\.
  6. Press the [Return] button.

Secondary Computer

Configure Sharing

  1. Right-click on the [Start] button and select Explore.
  2. In the Folders window, right-click on the My Computer item and select Map Network Drive...
  3. Change the Drive: selection to Y:. Note: If Y: is already in use, substitute another letter.
  4. Ensure the Reconnect at Login is checked.
  5. In the Folder: field, type \\computername\4HShare and hit [Enter]. The computername is the value noted in the Master Computer (pt 1), Configure Sharing, step 9.

Configure 4HPlus!

  1. In the Main window, select Set Up Networking.
  2. Type minicooper and press [Enter].
  3. Ensure the Set 'Multiple Installations on Network'... box is checked.
  4. Ensure the Read Only option is selected.
  5. In the Select Share Drive Letter box, choose Y:\.
  6. Press the [Test and Save Drive/Folder Location] button.
  7. Press the [Return] button.

Master Computer (pt 2)

  1. Right-click on [Start] and select Explore.
  2. In the Folders window, right-click on C: and select Sharing and Security...
  3. Click the [Permissions] button.
  4. For every user, ensure the only item checked is the Read box in the Allow column and press [Apply].
  5. Click [OK] when you are complete.
  6. Click [Apply] and then click [OK].
